This reusable water bottle from LARQ cleans itself and its water
Plastic pollution is one of the biggest threats to our climate and we are becoming more and more aware of this. For example, we are increasingly focusing on reusing plastic bottles - which is a step in the right direction, without a doubt - but did you know that reused, unwashed water bottles are a breeding ground for bacteria such as e-coli and microbes? The self-cleaning LARQ Bottle frees you from this worry.
The LARQ is a smart water bottle that - with just a push on the button and in only 1 minute – eliminates up to 99.99% of the bacteria in your water, using UV-C light. This is a technique that has been used in the hospital for some time, to disinfect surfaces for example. By incorporating this into the cap of the bottle, the LARQ team has developed the first portable water purification system.
The LARQ bottle has three different modes:
- Normal mode: By clicking the button once, the UV lamp activates for one minute (1200uW / sec.) This mode is intended for water that is relatively clean already, but could still contain bacteria.
- Adventure mode: By clicking the button twice you activate adventure mode, which cleans for 3 minutes at a 3 times stronger level of UV-C light (3000uW / sec.). Use this mode when you’re taking water from a stream for example.
- Travel mode: After activating the normal or adventure mode, the LARQ keeps its water clean by re-cleaning every 2 hours. Press the button on the cap for 5 to 10 seconds to active travel mode, which will stop the automatic cleaning cycle.
- Safety mode: When you remove the cap from the bottle it automatically enters safety mode, in which the UV light cannot be activated.
To recognize what the bottle is doing, the rim of the cap will light up when you activate a mode. Below you see a representation of which light belongs to which mode. This light also shows whether the battery is charged (green) or almost dead (yellow).
In addition to cleaning itself and its water, there are a number of other reasons that make this reusable bottle much more practical than regular plastic bottles. For example, it keeps hot drinks hot for up to 12 hours and cold drinks cold for up to 24 hours. The entire bottle is water resistant, even the USB port can stay under water for half an hour. A single battery charge lasts 1 – 2 months at a regular usage (3 to 4 cleanings per day) Battery empty? Plug it in the charger and it’s ready to clean again after only 2 hours.
